About Sao Paulo

Vibrant São Paulo is among the world's most populous cities. Brazil's financial center, it has abundant cultural institutions and a rich architectural tradition. Its iconic buildings range from the 1919 Edifício Martinelli skyscraper and the neo-Gothic Metropolitan Cathedral to modernist architect Oscar Niemeyer’s curvy Edifício Copan. The colonial-style Pátio do Colégio church marks where Jesuit priests founded the city in 1554. In 2013, São Paulo was the most populous city in Brazil and in South America. According to the 2010 IBGE Census, there were 11,144,369 people residing in the city of São Paulo. The city has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate, rainfall is high. Due to the altitude of the city, there are few hot nights in São Paulo even in the summer months. São Paulo is practically a museum in the open air, with neighborhoods and buildings of historical value. The city has museums and art galleries. Among the museums in the city are São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), the Ipiranga Museum, and the Museum of Sacred Art. It is also home to 3 major soccer teams Corinthians, Palmeiras and São Paulo FC.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Sao Paulo

There are 43,610 Jewish people living in the Sao Paulo area making up 1.1% of the overall population. The ancestors of the present Jewish population came to Sao Paulo in successive waves of immigration. Before WWI, after WWI, during and after WWII, during the 1950s and finally in the 70s and 80s. These waves of immigration brought Jews from all around the world. Nowadays there is an internal migration from the smaller communities of the state (Santo Andre, Santos, Vale do Paraiba, Campinas, Sorocaba) to Sao Paulo city. Many of the first immigrants to Sao Paulo city lived in the Bom Retiro neighborhood in the commercial area near the railway station. Moving to such neighborhoods as Jardins, Itaim, Vila Mariana and Higienopolis in the 1950s. There are around 10 synagogues and several kosher restaurants cafes and shops in São Paulo.
